You already knew that it’s so easy and effortless to use an electric standing desk converter. However, you may not know a few main things that commonly hinder people from buying it. If you are aware of these cons in advance, you will know what to expect from your new electric standing desk converter.
1. Anti-Collision Technology
Most newer full sized electric standing desk model have an anti collision technology where it will make the desk stop when it detects a resistance. For example, let’s say that you accidentally leave your chair underneath your standing desk and you lower down your desk without realizing that your chair is on the desk’s path. With this technology, your desk will stop once it comes in contact with the chair.
This nice feature, however, is rarely seen on an electric desk converter. In fact, from the list you are about to see, there is only one that comes with this technology. After knowing this limitation you have to be extra cautious when you raise and lower your desk. I think there is a slim chance that you will leave your cup of coffee underneath the converter. What most likely happens is that you could have wires getting stuck in the frame.
2. Slow Adjustment
No one can argue that a manual desk riser is faster than an electric one. With a manual standing desk converter, you only need to grab the lever and in 1 or 2 seconds you will be in a standing position.
An electric desk converter, however, might take a good 6 – 10 seconds to reach your preferred height. Believe it or not, this reason is enough to deter someone from sitting to standing. 3. Jumpy Motors
What do I mean by this? You might experience a sudden jump or shake near the top and bottom ranges of adjustment. This is because the technology is still catching up with the regular size standing desk.
Fortunately you should not need to worry much about it. After reading hundreds of reviews from many electric converter brands, I do not recall reading a review about damages caused by this jumpy motor.
You will also notice from my list below that some brands actually file a patent for their buffering system that makes the transition as smooth as possible so if you do not want to take any risks at all, you should select your desk among those brands.
4. What happens if the motor dies?
I have seen this question a lot of times and unfortunately, there is not much you can do. There are no handles or levers you can squeeze to move your electric desk riser. You will not be able to operate your desk if the power dies.
You should expect your electric converter to last for a few years. Therefore, I recommend that you always check the warranty period before you buy one.
The majority of the company will send you a replacement desk for a dead motor issue as long as it is still under the warranty period.

Thank for this article, I found it to be quite interesting. Many years ago, a coworker had an office next to mine. She had her monitor, keyboard and mouse sitting on a nicely decorated box. She would stand for hours during her shift happily typing away. I asked her about this and she told of the benefits of standing throughout the day.
